RADIOACTIVE ESSENCE

Promethium is an extremely rare element, with only 500–600 grams naturally occurring in all of Earth's crust at any time. All of its isotopes and chemical variants are radioactive, producing a faint green glow when active. With the atomic number 61 and its rather complex process of discovery (in which competing researchers made up false element-61's to claim ownership of the discovery), the element was named after Prometheus, the Titan from Greek mythology who stole fire from Mount Olympus and brought it down to humans, to symbolize both the courage and daring, as well as the possible negative uses of mankind's intellect. Because natural promethium is exceedingly scarce, it is typically created by bombarding uranium with thermal neutrons to produce the isotope Pm-147 as a fission product.

This painting, the first of the artist's Rare Elements collection, is intended to abstractly represent the wonder and complexity of this chemical marvel through color. Promethium is the beginning of a new phase in Scheinkerman's artistic development, in which the very building blocks of nature, the elements, are explored through the lens of neoplasticism, and converted into the expression of colour that create lasting impressions. This painting is beautiful and elegant, and its small size can be convenient in terms of giving it a place inside a home or painting collection. Although the lines and geometric forms may be simple in nature, the artistic effort behind each is sure to cause reflection. Promethium got its inspiration from the eponymous element, but it can be much more than an atom.

This painting's core essence is the application of human intellect, apropos the way this element was ultimately discovered. The challenge of finding element 61 exposed dishonesty in some scientists, but showed the perseverance and bravery of those who did not stop until it was truly found. This painting celebrates this aspect of the human spirit, and the artist hopes this ingenuity, inventiveness, and resourcefulness keep propelling human achievement to new heights.
